I have a bit to say about JLo at the AMAs.
I love Celia Cruz. Like, LOVE. Like, L.O.V.E LOVE. And don’t get me wrong, JLo is great. But this tribute should NOT have been done by her.
1. Celia was a magnificent singer. That’s why she was La Reina. Because she sang her face off. Watch this fucking vid of Celia with her buddy Tito Puente http://youtu.be/Zm2C5hx4sI0
JLo, on the other hand, is just a regular singer. Just like, hey, look at you JLo! You are singing! That is you, singing a song. Look at that.
2. Even though Celia sang Afro Cuban music, a very large part of it being Salsa, she wasn’t really known for being a dancer. I mean she danced! Duh, you’re singing Salsa, you better be shaking your ass at least a little. But she wasn’t a JLo dancer. Now JLo, SHE’S a dancer. Like, she nailed the dancing in this thing. CHE-LLO?! Ex Fly Girl?!
I know that JLo is the ONE Latina that these United States of America knows. But wouldn’t this have been a wonderful opportunity to perhaps showcase other Latinas and Latinos on a mainstream show that reached many American homes? I think so. (Remember when Buena Vista Social Club went on the Grammys and then everyone and their moms was like, “WHOA THOSE LITTLE OLD CUBANITOS ARE THE SHIT!” and everyone went out to get their album?)
The whole performance was very enjoyable! You can’t go wrong with a Celia song. EVER. And three of them? AWESOME!
I just wish someone that can wail, the way beautiful Celia did, had been up there to truly show the wonder that musica Latina can really be.
